Fluoride is a naturally occuring mineral that helps prevent tooth decay. Fluoride can be found in our toothpastes, mouth rinses and in some public drinking water. Your water supply company may fluoridate your water if you live in an area where the natural fluoride is below optimal levels. After one of our doctors has completed your child's exam and caries risk assesment, he may recommend a fluoride treatment in the office. Fluoride treatments have changed over the years and are simply and quickly brushed over the teeth. The use of fluoride can help decrease your child's tooth decay and even reverse the early stages of tooth decay. If your child is at high risk for developing tooth decay and your water does not contain optimal fluoride levels, a fluoride supplement may be prescribed to chew daily at home. Fluoride has been recommended by the American Dental Association as a safe and effective way to lower cavities by at least 25%. Please don't hesitate to ask us if you have any questions regarding fluoride and your child!
